Our nation is in pain. The recent and senseless death of George Floyd, and the preceding deaths of many others has forced necessary conversations to move forward that have been overdue for far too long. As an institution with a history of advocacy and justice in our roots, we’d be doing our community a disservice to remain silent in the face of such pain. We believe Black Lives Matter.

For 50 years, Share Our Selves has impartially served the marginalized because it is the right and just thing to do. We have partnered across all political lines and public sectors of our community to do so. Right now, and for far too long, black lives specifically are hurting. We must acknowledge this and wish to begin the thoughtful conversations that lead to tangible actions.  

We feel the pain of our neighbors and the black community. We stand in solidarity with addressing the need for racial and social justice. Being a community health center and advocate for our community, we will continue to actively engage in our mission of equality and public health.  As we explore further ways of becoming even stronger allies, we know that systemic change is not created alone. We will continue to engage our community partners (including political leaders and local law enforcement) along with the voices of those we serve to begin intentional dialogue that leads to change.

For now, we want to reassure our black community, we acknowledge your pain and you are not alone.
