Thank you to our community volunteers giving their time throughout the year. You help us ensure our community members have meals and gifts during the holiday season. We appreciate your care for our Orange County community!
SOS Volunteers Step Up During Crisis

SOS is a haven of super heroes! We rely on our volunteers to staff our food line/kitchen and front desk. As a result of the statewide COVID-19 ‘stay home’ order in March, our volunteer corps was dramatically impacted and we prioritized access to food for our neighbors in need. We needed volunteers to help keep our food pantry running while mitigating the COVID-19 virus. Those few SOS volunteers and community members who were able to safely volunteer during the pandemic, came out and showed up. They became our SOS COVID-19 Volunteer Response Team.
These super volunteer heroes took on multiple shifts in the same week, were immediately available when we needed to fill schedule gaps, worked hard assembling food bags, and arrived at work with big smiles. We want to recognize and thank the following SOS Volunteers:

Celebrating Our SOS Volunteers

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.
– Margaret Meade
SOS was founded 50 years ago by a small group of thoughtful committed volunteer families called to serve their most vulnerable neighbors in need of food, financial assistance, and medical care. Today, SOS volunteers continue to be an integral part of our mission to serve our Orange County community members in need. We are humbled and grateful to honor them as we celebrate Volunteer Month.
We currently have over 100 volunteers who serve on the food line and work at our front desk on a weekly basis. When volunteers leave at the end of their shift, they know someone was supported, fed, and clothed for the day. Additionally, volunteers from various corporations, schools, and local community groups give their time volunteering during our seasonal programs; Thanksgiving Program, Back To School, and Adopt A Family. SOS volunteers give their time and care throughout the year in the practice of our mission, “we are servants who provide care and assistance to those in need and act as advocates for systemic change.”
We are proud of our volunteer program offering opportunities for community members to serve their community. The shared common response as to why volunteers come to SOS is to give back through their time at a volunteer experience that provides meaningful work. SOS is a community centered organization where our volunteers embody our mission wholeheartedly and positively impacts people’s lives.
To kick off recognizing the great work of our volunteers during National Volunteer Month, we’d like to highlight a superstar SOS volunteer who makes a difference not only at SOS, also throughout the Costa Mesa community. We are proud to share that Rock Hunter is a OneOC Spirit of Volunteerism Award Honoree. To view his honoree profile, check out his link.
Join us in congratulating Rock for his dedication to his community through his endless volunteer service. Comment on our Facebook page and Instagram posts!
