Sleep Out on Superior
Costa Mesa, CA, November 20, 2015 – Share Our Selves’ 2nd Annual Sleep Out on Superior was truly a special night, shared with new friends and old. The all-night program and sleep out brought the community together to bring awareness to the issues of hunger and homelessness in Orange County.Participants included groups of USC and Cal State Fullerton students, a Cub Scout troop, and families with children – including infants! Over 200 people gathered at our Costa Mesa location to participate in activities such as packing bags of Thanksgiving produce, packing homeless food bags, sorting cans, bagging chickens, and making hygiene kits. We had wonderful speakers – Helen Cameron of Jamboree Housing, longtime SOS volunteer Father Phil DeVaul, and Carlos, one of our homeless clients.
The evening ended with a screening of “Motel Kids” an excellent HBO documentary about children in Orange County living in motels. Over 20 people spent the night in our parking lot, and woke up eager to share their experiences. The group enjoyed breakfast provided by Chef Mark Gagnon of Newport Beach Plaza, before packing up and heading home.
Many thanks to everyone who assisted us with planning this new event, and thank you to those staff members who joined us for the night.
