2015 Back to School Backpack Program

20th Annual Back to School Backpack Drive

Through our 20th Annual Back to School Program, SOS distributed over 4,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to local students from low-income families. On Saturday, August 29th, families came to The Crossing Church in Costa Mesa to pick up their backpacks. For the first time, SOS provided families with a backpack for every child in their family. Participants were also able to enjoy the Back to School Community Exchange, with a “Resource Row” where community groups, including Wells Fargo, Safe Families, Olive Crest, and Team Kids, occupied booths and provided information about their programs and resources. Children’s activities were also available, such as a photo booth where kids could dress up as what they want to be when they grow up. Other activities included dancing and painting.

SOS distributed 3,300 backpacks on Saturday. Additional backpacks were given to the organizations that were part of the resource fair to share with families they serve. The rest of the backpacks will be given out at SOS this week The Back to School distribution was made possible thanks to the hundreds of volunteer hours and charitable contributions of individuals and organizations. This program would not be possible without the support of the community.

SOS was fortunate to once again be part of this year’s OC Fair’s We Care Wednesday School Supply Drive. Fairgoers donated over 130,000 school supplies to Share Our Selves. We extend a heartfelt thank you to the OC Fair and to everyone who came out to support the drive. We are also immensely grateful to Reyes Holding, who not only donated backpacks and volunteer time, but offered 12,000 feet of warehouse space to house the supplies before the distribution. We would also like to give a huge thank you to The Crossing church for hosting the backpack distribution.

Thank you to this year’s donors who hosted drives and donated school supplies:
