2014 Vision & Values Awards

SOS Vision & Values Awards

On Friday, August 1st, the entire SOS staff gathered at the Balboa Harborside Pavilion in Newport Beach for an afternoon of fun at the first Vision & Values Awards luncheon. This event recognized the staff members that best represent the SOS Core Values of Dignity, Service, Excellence and Justice. There was also a Visionary Award honoree who best exemplifies our forward-thinking mission by taking risks, standing by their vision with confidence and passion, and being willing to experiment in order to allow for breakthroughs in creativity and discovery.

The event started off with lemonade and a chance for staff members to mingle while admiring the sweeping views of the beautiful Newport Beach harbor seen from the ballroom. Then Chief Operations Officer Jeremy Elkins began the program with a description of the Patient Experience Action Committee (PEAC) and grant that served as the genesis of the awards.

Next, the awards presentation began, with staff members who had nominated their coworkers taking the stage to announce the honorees. Each honoree received a trophy, had their name placed on a plaque that will be showcased at SOS, and got two tickets to the 2014 Celebrity Chef Dinner that will take place on November 7.

Veronica Rodarte presented the Dignity award to Eligibility Specialist Lidia Jauregui-Campos, who coworkers described on their nominations as “an advocate for the community who works tirelessly to ensure that patients at SOS are served with the utmost care.” Another nominator said, “She makes patients feel comfortable, gives them the respect they deserve and listens to their needs without judgment – creating an open in environment where each person regardless of their status will feel like they belong. Lidia is open with her opinions on how to improve certain workflows and programs and provides her input in a manner which prompts other employees to be open and honest with both their successes and challenges.”

Next, Director of Marketing & Special Events Elizabeth Hopkins presented the Service award to Case Manager Yadira Gomez, whose “stories from case management show how time and time again she has gone out of her way to make sure someone got the care and resources they needed at their lowest point. If she is told we can’t do something, she says ‘why not?’ She does not believe that rules are hard and fast when it comes to giving help; she always wants to make an exception for people she believes in. Her clients feel comfortable with her because of her great capacity for empathy. After working with her, so many these clients are able to go on and live healthy productive lives. That is the true proof of how powerful her help is.”

Jeremy Elkins retook the stage to introduce Director of Clinical Pharmacy Services Mary Ann Huntsman as the Excellence honoree. Mary Ann was recognized for being “instrumental in moving the clinic initiatives at Share Our Selves forward. She has built the Pharmacy department into a true center of excellence. In her role as the Director of Clinical Pharmacy Services she has been the lead in the PSPC program for which she and her team have received national recognition. As chair of the Continuous Quality Improvement Committee, she has instilled the tenets of quality improvement throughout the clinic and initiated the organization’s involvement with the Building Clinical Capacity for Quality (BCCQ) Program. While Mary Ann has spearheaded a culture of change and improvement at SOS, her most valuable contribution has been the manner in which she promotes excellence in all her endeavors.”

Next up was Accounting Manager Linda Giel and Facilities Manager Vanessa Ontiveros to present the Justice Award to Social Services Program Coordinator Veronica Rodarte, who was commended for being “passionate about being an advocate for the most vulnerable in Orange County. Her commitment to justice is evident in her work to organize and lead special events that are critical to the SOS community. The impact of the annual Back to School Backpack giveaway or Thanksgiving food distribution are due largely in part to her passion to see justice in the lives of the individuals these programs serve. Her advocacy for social justice extends outside of Share Our Selves as well through her work with community and other grassroots efforts. Her commitment to justice reorients those around her to the enduring principles of SOS.”

Lastly, Dental Director Dr. Jila Nikkhah and Case Worker Israel Ortiz presented the Visionary award to Executive Director Karen McGlinn. Her coworkers nominated her because “She has given her life’s work to SOS. She has taken risks, leads with strength and passion to grow SOS into to the community health center we are today.” They also said, “Every time we have a meeting, she has a very clear vision of what she wants to get done.” Also, “Karen encourages her staff to take risks and try new ways of doing things.” “Karen is the most visionary person I have ever worked with. She is a true leader and is not afraid of change.” SOS staff members said, “There is no one more deserving of this award that Karen. She embodies all of our values and continues to move SOS forward for the betterment of her fellowman.”

Karen McGlinn closed the awards with a touching speech about SOS and the many ways it is moving towards the future. After the program, attendees were invited to enjoy a Balboa Bar station and make their own delicious treats!
