SOS Star Team Onion Luncheon
On Wednesday, May 18th, 75 SOS Star Team members, SOS A–Team members and their guests attended the 17th annual SOS Star Team Luncheon, held at the beautiful Five Crowns Restaurant in Corona Del Mar. The luncheon honored the members of the Star Team, a support guild of Share Our Selves. The fundraising efforts of the guild directly benefit the life sustaining services SOS provides to Orange County residents living in poverty. From the generosity of the Star Team’s membership and the luncheon, approximately $42,000 was raised to support Share Our Selves’ programs.
SOS A–Team President, Kathy Thompson, founded the Star Team in 1994 to support Share Our Selves. The Star Team is comprised of members who agree to make an annual financial commitment to SOS.
The Onion Luncheon gets its name from a special tradition – favor bags of Imperial County Sweet Onions are gifted to each guest. For more than twenty years, Kathy has made giving away these coveted onions to friends and family a passion. At the first Star Team luncheon in 1994, the gifts bags of onions totaled 75 pounds. Today the luncheon has grown to require over 1,000 pounds of onions – representing the continual growth of the Star Team and their generosity to Share Our Selves.
The luncheon featured a live auction for 16 amazing items which included a gold and diamond anchor pendant donated by WM Harold Jewelers, a “Spring Bloom” Giclee by Pilar Wayne, and tickets to the Wine and Food Festival at the Balboa Bay Club, generously donated by Henry Schielein. Once again the highlight of the auction was the 50 pound bag of Imperial County Onions donated by Troy Caston Farms. The onions garnered lively bidding and were won by Alice Blair. Her $600 bid set a new record for the highly coveted onions!
