Did you know that on any given night in Orange County, almost 4,300 people are homeless? As we tuck ourselves into our warm beds, with sturdy roofs over our heads, there are individuals and families with small children hunkering down for the night in parks, on the beach, in cars, and under freeway on-ramps and bridges. These less fortunate neighbors of ours did not choose their current circumstance. They are often victims of job loss or underemployment, domestic violence, veterans with few resources at their disposal, or suffering from severe mental illness.

Share Our Selves is holding our 4th Annual Sleep Out on Superior, a two night event, to raise awareness about the issues of hunger and homelessness in Orange County. Sleep Out on Superior “Family Night” will occur on Thursday, November 16th. This event is dedicated to educating elementary school age children on the issues of hunger and homelessness in a way that is relatable and easy to understand. Children will have the opportunity to pack hygiene kits, decorate place-mats and draw pictures on cards to be passed out to the homeless children and families in Orange County.

Our overnight Sleep Out on Superior event will be held on November 17th – 18th. This night is a call to solidarity with the homeless in our community, and a moment in time when we align ourselves with those we see but do not understand. Share Our Selves is asking for community members’ support by pledging to sleep outside for one night. The evening will also feature speakers on homelessness, a documentary screening, and volunteer activities such as filling bags of Thanksgiving food items and assembling hygiene kits for distribution to Share Our Selves’ clients.

These events are timed with National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. This weeklong effort is held annually the week before Thanksgiving to encourage us to remember and assist those who have less to be thankful for. By participating, you will be joining a local and national movement to end hunger and homelessness.
