19th Annual Back to School Program

August 2014

This summer, Share Our Selves (SOS) will distribute over 2,500 backpacks filled with school supplies to Orange County students from low income families through the 19th Annual Back to School Program. We need your help to meet this goal! SOS is collecting donations of new backpacks, school supplies, hand sanitizer, gift cards for school uniforms, lunch bags, etc.

Please help Share Our Selves send kids back to school with a great start! A positive beginning to the school year can have an important impact on each student’s success.


  • $25 will provide 5 children with a new backpack
  • $50 will provide 10 children with a new backpack
  • $100 will provide 20 children with a new backpack
  • $250 will provide 50 children with a new backpack
  • $500 will provide 100 children with a new backpack

If you are in need of assistance and would like to sign up for this year’s Back to School Program, you can register at SOS in person August 4-22. Please bring your ID and proof of address. You will be given a time to come back and pick up your backpack between August 27-29. Families will receive two backpacks maximum.

OC Fair We Care Wednesday School Supply Drive

We are thrilled to be a part of the OC Fair’s We Care Wednesday School Supply Drive, benefitting SOS. A school supply donation of $5 with receipt (required) or more will get you free admission to the fair and one carnival ride. See you there!

Items Accepted: pens, pencils, crayons, notebooks, notebook paper, backpacks, colored pencils, markers, pencil boxes, pocket folders

Giving Guidelines:

  • Ride together + give together – carpooling is highly encouraged.
  • Prepare to arrive early to donate items at BLUE / GREEN / YELLOW gates.
  • Donate between noon – 3 pm.
  • Guest must be present with donation to receive FREE ticket.
  • Guest will receive one ticket and one carnival ride per person.
  • Total party must be present to donate.
  • Free tickets will not be issued after 3 pm.
  • Late arrivals (after 3 pm) will be required to pay general admission.
  • No drop-off donations accepted at the main gate turn around.

Join us as we celebrate National Health Center Week with the 1st Annual SOS Community Health & Wellness Fair! We will have giveaways, health screenings, raffles, a farmer’s market, legal advice from Public Law Center, financial planning advice from Wells Fargo, representatives from 211 and the Orange County Health Care Agency, and more. Plus, it’s free!

The event will take place on Wednesday, August 13th from 8:30am – 11:00am in the back parking lot at SOS. You can see the flyer here. We hope to see you there!

You are invited to join us for Share Our Selves’ 24th Annual Celebrity Chef Dinner in support of the fight to end hunger and homelessness in our community. On any given night in night in Orange County, over 4,300 people are homeless. This year’s theme, “A Night under the Stars,” is a reminder that so many of our neighbors live in uncertain conditions, without a permanent roof over their heads.

The event highlights a group of outstanding local chefs who are committed to providing food and services for the vulnerable populations in Orange County. The dinner features five exquisite courses paired with specialty wines, a silent auction, and a live auction in which the chefs offer exciting one-of-a kind dining packages.

Proceeds from the event benefit the SOS Food Pantry and Comprehensive Service Center, which provides food and needed services such as rental and utilities assistance, transportation, and seasonal programs for low income individuals and families.

As we tuck ourselves into our warm beds, with sturdy roofs over our heads, there are individuals and families with small children hunkering down for the night in parks, on the beach, and under freeway onramps and bridges. These less fortunate neighbors of ours did not choose their current circumstance. They are often victims of job loss or underemployment, domestic violence, veterans with few resources at their disposal, or suffering from severe mental illness.

We invite you to join us by participating in the 1st Annual Sleep Out on Superior – an all-night program and sleep out to bring awareness to the issues of hunger and homelessness in Orange County.

We are coordinating our efforts with National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. This weeklong effort is held annually the week before Thanksgiving to encourage us to remember and assist those who have less to be thankful for. By committing to sleeping outside for one night, you will be joining a local and national movement.

The evening will include:

  • Projects to assist our homeless clients – packing food bags, making hygiene kits
  • Card making (writing holiday cards and messages of hope)
  • Speakers & documentary screenings
