A Model of Excellence
Founded in 1970, Share Our Selves (SOS) has grown to become a model nonprofit organization providing the highest quality comprehensive safety net services to the homeless and low-income populations in Orange County, California. Initial services included food distribution, clothing and emergency financial aid for housing, transportation, prescriptions and children’s needs.
- In 1984, the mission of SOS expanded to include free medical care with Dr. Donald Drake, former Chief of Staff at Hoag Hospital, serving as the Medical Director.
- In 1987, services expanded to include free dental care.
- In 1993, a full-service dispensary was added.
- In 2004, women’s health and wellness programs were initiated.
- In 2005, SOS added the diabetes management program.
- In 2010, the SOS Medical Clinic implemented an integrated practice management and electronic medical record system.
- In 2010, a telemedicine pilot program connecting SOS clinicians and specialists within the University of California medical system was initiated.
- In 2010, SOS opened the SOS-El Sol Wellness Center, an ongoing collaboration with the El Sol Science and Arts Academy, a charter school in Santa Ana. The Wellness Center was established to provide neighborhood-centric health services for those with limited or no access to more traditional medical services. This added pediatric care to our services.
- In 2012, SOS received designation as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), completing a two-year strategic plan to increase clinic sustainability and expand the patient population we serve.
- In 2012, SOS opened the SOS and PEACE Center Health Clinic in collaboration with Saddleback Church, located in Lake Forest. This 20-hour-per-week clinic provides episodic medical care to South Orange County residents, a greatly underserved population.
- In 2013, the SOS Clinical Pharmaceutical Services team was awarded the Exceptional Team Award 2012-13 from the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Patient Safety and Clinical Pharmacy Services Collaborative (PSPC). Our team was one of three teams out of 250 nationally to be selected for the award.
- In 2014, SOS opened its fourth location. The SOS Children & Family Health Center is located in Newport Beach and provides comprehensive healthcare to children and women.
- In 2014, SOS received the CalOptima Circle of Care Award for demonstrating excellence in the delivery of accessible and high-quality healthcare services to CalOptima members. The award honors those who go above and beyond in serving their profession, patients or clients.
- In 2015, SOS achieved National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) status. A PCMH is recognized as a model of primary care that combines teamwork and information technology to improve care, improve patients’ experience of care and reduce costs.
- In 2015, SOS relocated and expanded the SOS-El Sol Wellness Center to a new facility located at 1014 N. Broadway. This state-of-the-art center offers comprehensive primary care to El Sol students and family, and the Santa Ana community.
- In 2016, SOS opened the SOS Dr. Robert & Dorothy Beauchamp Children & Family Dental Center in Newport Beach, and the SOS Health Center at The Samueli Academy in Santa Ana, expanding our services to even more Orange County families in need.
- In 2016, the SOS Community Health Center achieved Level III Patient-Centered Medical Home status, recognizing our commitment to improving care through strengthening the relationship between our patients and providers, and coordinating care with a team that is committed to each patient’s health care needs.
- In 2016, the SOS Center for Care for the Homeless was founded. Homeless clients now have a physical space in the SOS Community Health Center where they can meet with our Homeless Specialist and other case workers and feel welcome and secure.
- In 2016, the SOS Homeless Transport Van was unveiled. This van transports homeless clients to medical appointments and other places, removing yet one more barrier to care.
- In 2016, the SOS Health Mobile began providing medical and dental services in a brand-new vehicle, bringing care to the community where the need is greatest.
For more than 45 years SOS has provided a safety net to those needing emergency assistance. We pride ourselves on our fast response time, quality services, lack of bureaucracy, and caring response to those in crisis.
We believe in personalized care as a means to deliver quality services, improve population health and stability, and reduce costs. Valuing the concept of the right person, the right treatment, at the right time means we see care as predictive, preventive, personalized, and participatory.
Share Our Selves emphasizes care of the whole person though our comprehensive services, including medical and dental care, social services, behavioral health and seasonal outreach programs. We offer excellent case management, patient navigation, and solutions for social stressors for low–income and homeless individuals and families in Orange County.

In 1970, Frank and Jean Forbath, members of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Costa Mesa, CA, gathered a group of concerned parishioners together to discuss how to care for those living in poverty in Orange County after the nation’s Catholic bishops encouraged church members to “wage war on misery.” Share Our Selves was established out of these discussions to provide for the most serious concerns of those most in need, including food, health care, clothing, and emergency financial aid for housing, transportation, prescriptions and children’s needs.
Now, 46 years later, we honor our founders for their compassion, generosity and tenacity in addressing the needs of the low-income population and upholding the basic human rights of everyone in our community. Their hard work has led to an organization that continues to expand health care services to our most vulnerable neighbors, and develop innovative solutions to address the systemic nature of poverty, and we are grateful for all they have done for SOS.
