Sleep Out On Superior
Costa Mesa, CA—Share Our Selves’ 3rd Annual Sleep Out on Superior was truly a special night, shared with new friends and old. For the first time, SOS introduced a Sleep Out on Superior “Family Night” held from 5-7pm on Thursday, November 17th. Over 100 children and parents attended the event, which was dedicated to educating elementary school age children on the issues of hunger and homelessness. Children had the opportunity to pack hygiene kits, decorate place-mats, build can castles and draw pictures on cards to be passed out to the homeless children and families in Orange County. After a quick break for dinner, participants listened to SOS Social Services Director, Rudy Ramos ready a children’s book which told the story of a young homeless boy. SOS was thrilled to get the children of our community involved and participating in activities to make Orange County a happier, healthier place for everyone who lives here.
The following night, November 18th, SOS’ all-night program and sleep out brought the community together to bring awareness to the issues of hunger and homelessness in Orange County. Participants included groups of Cal State Fullerton students, Apple employees, and OC families! Over 100 people gathered at our Costa Mesa location to participate in activities such as packing bags of Thanksgiving produce, packing homeless food bags, sorting cans, bagging chickens, and making hygiene kits. We had wonderful speakers – SOS Homeless Specialist, Michael McGlinn, as well as two of SOS’ homeless clients, Jim and Jim. The evening ended with a screening of “Storied Streets” a powerful documentary that profiles the struggles of the homeless and the formerly homeless. Over 20 people spent the night in our parking lot, and woke up eager to share their experiences. The group enjoyed breakfast provided by Chef Mark Gagnon of Newport Beach Plaza, before packing up and heading home.
Many thanks to everyone who assisted us with planning this new event, and thank you to those staff members who joined us for the night.
