21st Annual Back to School Backpack Drive
Share Our Selves distributed over 4,300 backpacks filled with school supplies to local students from low-income families through their 21st Annual Back to School Program. On Saturday, August 20th, families came to The BESST Center in Costa Mesa to pick up their backpacks. SOS was able to provided families with a backpack for every child in their family. Additional backpacks and supplies were shared with local family resource centers. Participants were also able to enjoy a “Resource Row” where community groups, including Save Our Youth, Boys Town and Child Protective Services, occupied booths and provided information about their programs and resources. The 4000+ backpacks distributed were stuffed full of items such as pencils, rulers, spiral notebooks, crayons, paper, calculators, markers, lunch bags, folders, and erasers. The backpacks and supplies were stored and stuffed in warehouse space generously donated by Reyes Holdings in Huntington Beach until distribution day. The event itself was filled with cheerful faces and excited children. It was truly a community collaboration as volunteers, donors and staff worked to distribute backpacks from 9am until 2pm. The Back to School distribution was made possible thanks to the hundreds of volunteer hours and charitable contributions of individuals and organizations. SOS was fortunate to once again be part of this year’s OC Fair’s We Care Wednesday School Supply Drive. Fairgoers donated over 130,000 school supplies to Share Our Selves which was critical in filling thousands of backpacks. With the help of partners, donors, volunteers and staff, thousands of local children are ready for the school year.
