SOS in Action:

Responding to the Rising Needs in Our Community

Our community needs us now more than ever. As the economy continues to remain in flux and unemployment rates remain high, the demand for the most basic of needs – food, shelter, medical and dental care – are at an all time high. As mentioned in a September 14, 2011 article on the front page of the Los Angeles Times Business Section, nearly 1 in 5 California residents lack health insurance and roughly
"6 million Californians live below the federal poverty line of $22,113 for a family of four in 2010." As one of the largest providers of safety net services in Orange County, Share Our Selves aims to meet the challenge of providing assistance to the most vulnerable populations living in our community.

When demands increase, our staff, volunteers and donors respond with action. In the most recent year the SOS family came together to provide:

  • 1,519 bags of food were distributed the three days before Thanksgiving. It took 168 volunteers 504 hours to fill and distribute the bags stuffed with turkeys, chickens, produce and other holiday food items.
  • 2,513 backpacks filled with school supplies for students from low income families
  • 44,999 bags of food to clients in need of food assistance
  • 1,389 families with 4,402 children with gifts and food for the holidays
  • 8,057 financial aid visits – to keep families in their homes & utilities turned on
  • 11,840 patient visits in the SOS Medical Clinic
  • 6,790 patient visits in the SOS Dental Clinic
  • 471 patient visits at the SOS-El Sol Wellness Center

Join us in helping our neighbors in need. Even a small donation makes a big difference. Here's how you can help:

  • $25 provides hygiene products for 5 homeless individuals
  • $30 provides food for 10 families
  • $45 buys three clients a one week bus pass
  • $60 pays one family's utility bill
  • $100 provides eyeglasses for one patient
  • $242 provides lab tests for 100 medical patients
  • $500 provides rental assistance for a family at risk of losing their apartment
  • $780 provides upper and lower dentures for 3 uninsured patients
  • $2,000 provides medical care for a chronically ill patient for 1 year
